An infinite debt of gratitude goes to this week’s Spotlight Artist, Dorothy Kamm, for her invaluable contribution to the “Member Spotlight” series and Art St. Lucie Magazine’s inaugural issue.  Neither one would be possible without her creativity, passion, and love for the arts. – Alyona Ushe, Executive Director.

Multi-talented artist and author Dorothy Kamm has been involved with the arts since she first moved to Port St. Lucie in 1987.

“St. Lucie County has much to offer regarding culture, something that I and many others wanted to market to both residents and visitors,” says Kamm, adding that she finds the St. Lucie Cultural Alliance the ‘perfect vehicle’ to accomplish this.

Last year she joined in what is now the upward, growing St. Lucie Cultural Alliance as a supporter in its Individual Category of membership. “I joined to help spread the word about the wonderful, creative people who live on the Treasure Coast and the many cultural venues located here, and to meet others who share a common interest,” Kamm says.

This year, the Alliance is recognized for marked growth in membership and offerings for its members such as promoting and spearheading exhibitions and events in partnership with the area’s culturally rich museums, exhibitions, live performances, events, gardens, nature centers and other tourism draws for locals and visitors alike.

Working in a variety of mediums including painting on porcelain; painting on canvas with oils and watercolors; and creating beaded jewelry, Kamm believes in the power of the artist community and the impact it brings to the economy.

“The arts and cultural sector provide the benefits of an economic engine – one that supports jobs, remits taxes, and contributes significantly to the overall St Lucie County economy,” she says.

Combining her passions, Kamm has written three award-winning books and has been a guest curator for four museum exhibitions.

“Sometimes art is at the forefront and sometimes writing, but I have been able to combine my passions by writing about a variety of art topics,” she says. “I’m always excited to share my passions and share what I learn. Publishing books and articles allows me to reach a wide audience.”

A generous volunteer for the St. Lucie Cultural Alliance, Kamm writes Member Spotlight stories and is a contributor for ART ST LUCIE Magazine.

As a longtime community supporter and volunteer in arts and cultural circles, over the years Kamm has met many people who were creative and artistic.

“Some were retirees who had had successful art careers,” she says. “When they retired, they did not stop creating, and they were very supportive of my endeavors.

With the variety of Membership categories the Alliance extends to artists – and for those who want to support the Alliance and greater community but are not artists – Kamm offers an invitation.  “I encourage everyone to consider joining. Everyone benefits, not only by keeping all our treasured venues operating but also by residual business from visitors who spend dollars here,” she said. “Best of all, Alliance members will have fun mingling with creative people!”
