The St. Lucie Cultural Alliance will host a professional development workshop, “Intro to Public Art,” at the Port St. Lucie Botanical Gardens on Tuesday, August 3, beginning at 10 a.m. The workshop is free for Cultural Alliance members and residents of Port St. Lucie, and costs $25 for all other participants.

The workshop was designed with the Cultural Alliance’s mission to empower its artists to achieve their highest potential in mind. “Intro to Public Art” will be presented in partnership with the City of Port St. Lucie Public Arts and will focus on the critical components of successfully responding to a call to artists.

Debby Coles-Dobay, one of the area’s top art professionals, will lead the workshop. Coles-Dobay is the founder of Art Moves You, and has overseen the conception of more than 80 public art projects. Under her guidance, participants will go over the basics of public art programs, how to prepare a Call-to-Artists, RFQ and RFP, tips to become a public artist, and the best practices and resources for public artists.

“I would encourage all local artists to take advantage of this workshop,” said Pattie Tobin, Long Range Planning Administrator for Port St. Lucie, and who manages Public Art for the city. “It will help them prepare for any call to artists that local governments, like Port St. Lucie, will send out to solicit public art. The responses to our call to artists in the past have included some great entries and some not-so-great entries. It’s important to have a thorough and responsive application to get your art selected.”
