Bio
Maricel Ruiz (born in 1984) is an American multi-disciplinary artist. She was born in Miami, FL from Cuban parents. Through the use of nervous lines found throughout her body of work, she expresses her anxieties of being a mother of three Cuban and African American mixed-race children.
In 2007, Maricel Ruiz began her artistic career with her solo show, Simplified Randomization, at Edge Zones in Wynwood, FL. This exhibition included only intuitive based graphite drawings. Since then, her work has grown to include paintings, mixed media and fiber art. She may be best known for her works which incorporate real human hair on domestic textiles.
She received her MFA and BFA from Florida International University and taught for over 10 years as an art instructor at Priscilla & Tiffany’s Art Academy in Miami and at Campbell Drive Middle School in Homestead, FL. Her work has been shown at an array of South Florida art spaces such as: City Arts in Orlando, The Art Center Sarasota, The Art and Cultural Center in Hollywood, Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum in Miami, Miami Beach Urban Studios,79th Street Miami Beach Walgreens Windows (in collaboration with Oolite Arts), Laundromat Art Space in Little River, 1310 Gallery in Ft. Lauderdale, Nina Surel’s Gallery in Miami, Pinecrest Gardens, Edge Zones and Bakehouse Art Complex in Wynwood.
