Juanita enjoys the physicality of stone carving and the creative challenges of working in a natural media which can be both intimidating and empowering. Juanita splits her time between the Georgia mountains in summer and Sebastian, FL during winter and spring. Juanita’s approach to stone carving is more intuitive than planned and she begins each new piece without a preconceived idea for the finished sculpture. She relies on the discovery of each stone’s unique characteristics for inspiration. Taking hammer and chisel in hand, she explores the natural contours of the stone, the way it breaks when chiseled, and exposes the hidden colors and veining beneath the stone’s surface. This way an idea for the sculpture develops organically which is reflected in the flow of the forms Juanita creates. “With the stone as my guide, a sculpture emerges.”
